Herbs – Borage – Common

4005 Borago officinalis

Annual. 50 days.
Originating in the Mediterranean (possibly Syria), used by Greeks and Romans. Introduced to the Americas by 17th-century colonists and naturalized in many regions.
Observations about Borage from 2000 years ago still ring true with herbal wisdom today: “Borage cheers the heart and helps a drooping spirit.”
An annual herb that is a delight in any garden. Easy to grow from seed, plants are vigorous, quickly growing to 2’ in one season. Pretty lilac-coloured star shaped blossoms are edible with a hint o’ fresh cucumber flavour! Add blossoms to salad mixes for a gourmet twist, or put into summer drinks for refreshing sweetness and colour.
Borage produces a lot of nectar. Traditionally, it has been planted near hives to increase honey production.
It’s a great companion plant alongside tomatoes and cabbages.
Self-seeds.
