5033 Sorghum bicolor
Annual. 90 days.
Broomcorn originated in central Africa, where it eventually spread to the Mediterranean. Benjamin Franklin is credited with first bringing broomcorn to the United States in the 1700s.
Plants can grow to 10′ tall, with upright sprays of colorful seed heads filled with brilliant red, orange and almost black seeds.
Traditionally, the seed heads were stripped of seeds, dried and bound in bunches to make brooms.
Perfect for fall decorations, seeds are a treat for chickens and birds.
