Welcome to Hope Seeds

Peas

One of the most rewarding and common garden crops around.  Peas prefer cool weather and soil for germination and growing, and can be planted early Spring or Fall for a second crop.  Shell peas are varieties where you allow the pods to swell and peas to partially develop.  Pods are popped open and fresh peas are "shelled" out for fresh eating or freezing.  Snow peas are harvested before the pods start to swell and the whole pod is eaten.  Snap peas are the best of both worlds, where the pod and peas swell, but the pod becomes thick and juicy and the whole thing is edible.

We're really happy to introduce a solution for those of you who long for something green year-round:  pea shoots!   They're super easy to grow, oh-so-gourmet, and chefs...well, anyone really, love them.   We've included step-by-step instructions (with pics!) for you to download.   Seed comes from our newest member to the Hope Seeds grower network, Mark and Sally Bernard of Barnyard Organics in Freetown, PEI.

Plant peas 1-2" deep, 2-4" apart.  Space rows 12-18" apart for dwarf (non-staking) varieties, 4-6' apart for climbers (I plant double rows for climbers so peas grow up both sides of the fence).  Get them in quick, and once harvest starts, the more you pick the more vines will set flowers and pods.

BACK! ALASKA (Shell)                                                                           Certified Organic
60 days.  The Alaska pea was an 1887 selection of the “Earliest of All” pea, which was first introduced by Laxton’s of England in 1881.  The new variety was named after the steamship “Alaska”, which held the transatlantic crossing record at that time.  The vines grow 24-36” tall and produce an early heavy crop of small pods containing 5 to 8 peas each.  Peas are smooth and round with a blue tint.    Fresh Fine Dining chef, Jeff MacLean was really disappointed when I told him Alaska was a seed crop and "no...hands off my peas, mister!" during a farm visit last summer!

SCHWEIZER REISEN (Snow)                                            Certified Organic

SORRY...Sold out by 25-Mar-2010!

55 days.  The last thing I planted at the little farm in Spring '08 was a short row of Schweizer Reisen peas.  It was a bit of a warm snap, but turned quickly cool for a few more weeks thereafter.  Scheweizer Reisen never even noticed - popping up within 2-3 days, and growing like gangbusters! This strain comes to Hope Seeds from Mike & Melba Rabinowitz of The Organic Farm in Newfoundland.  Vines are tall and need staking, flowers are a gorgeous purple, and snow pea pods are large and delicately flavoured.

65 days.  Even though snap peas are my favourite anyways, Sugar Ann is absolutely lovely!  Nice plump peas fill juicy pods on climbing vines, and are tasty as a fresh snack, lightly steamed or frozen for winter eating.  Very prolific and keeps on producing the more you pick.
