Welcome to Hope Seeds

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are just one member of the cucurbitacea family, others being melons, squash, pumpkins, etc.  All of them tend to be heavy feeders enjoying the extra dob of compost around the roots,  and really do well in warm weather.   They tend to take over more than their fair share of the garden, but can be tamed back by using bush varieties or trellising up fences or teepee structures.  Cukes will keep on producing the more you pick.  All of the varieties below are open-pollinated.

NEW!  SUYO LONG  (Slicer)                                                               Certified Organic
60 days.  Who’s willing to try something a little different?  It may look a little...odd…but you’re guaranteed to end up with one of the best tasting cukes you’ll ever eat!  Suyo Long has its origins in Asia, but recently stretched all the way to this continent.  Fruits have dark-green, bumpy skins with white spines (easy to rub off), and grow up to 15” long, 2” diameter.  Curling at one end can be cured by trellising for straight fruits.  Curious customers at the farm market this summer stepped right up for a sample, then filled their bags with great taste.

TANTE ALICE  (English)                                                                      Certified Organic
65-70 days.  Tante Alice comes to Hope Seeds through Seeds of Diversity Canada's annual seed exchange.  While we recieved it from member Antoine D'Avignon, this very rare variety can be traced back to Alice Gosselin of Dorchester, QC.  Mrs. Gosselin was growing this cucumber in her gardens at 88 years young in 1988.  SoDC members have continued its preservation for the last decade with good reason!  English-style slicers grow 12-14" long on vines that, if trellised, will encourage straight fruits.  Excellent flavour and shows disease resistant qualities.

MARKETMORE 76  (Slicer)                                                                Certified Organic
60-65 days.  Not much needs to be said about North America's favourite choice for an open-pollinated slicing cucumber!  8-9" dark green fruits are bitterless, crisp and abundant on vines that are disease and drought-resistant.  Long picking season, so you can plant less but eat more.

MIDEAST PROLIFIC  (Slicer/pickler)                                         Certified Organic
55-60 days.  Flavour, flavour, flavour!  It was a race to the cuke patch to see who would get the Mideast treat for the day.  This lovely thin-skinned Lebanese slicing cuke (harvest young for pickling) is a great choice for taste and abundance in our short seasons. Even though the truck took out a tray of seedlings the morning of planting day, direct-seeding as a last resort (and I admit I had pretty much given up) still gave enough time for Mideast Prolific to fill bushels well before even a hint of frost.

BOOTHBY'S BLONDE  (Pickling)                                                Sustainably Grown
50 days from transplant.  Boothby's is by far my favourite cucumber!  Nice and sweet flavour that is refreshingly juicy but crisp.  Skin is a creamy blonde colour, and fruits are ideally harvested at the 5" stage.  Overgrown fruits are lovely in Lady Ashburnham pickles - a Carleton County standard relish.

EARLY RUSSIAN  (Pickling)                                                         Sustainably Grown
55 days from transplant.  This is a short season pickling cuke, found in Canadian gardening history going many decades back. Skins are deep green with black spines that easily rub off.  Good and crisp for excellent dills.
