Chard / Swiss Chard
Swiss chard came onto my horizon when I started looking around at the
spring greens served up in Maritime kitchens. Folks out here love
it as a cooked green, similar to beet greens or spinach - no surprise
as they're all related! Chard is the one to choose for a summer
green as it doesn't bolt like spinach once the warm weather and long
daylength hits. Direct seed chard as soon as your soil can be
worked. We've started adding it as a baby green to salad mixes,
but many folks let the leaves grow larger and harvest whole plants for
market. Quite versatile, and low maintenance.
Approx. 70 seeds/gram
NEW! FIVE COLOUR SILVERBEET Certified Organic
45 days. A rainbow right in the garden! This chard was commercially introduced by British seed company Thompson & Morgan back in the 18th cantury as "Rainbow Chard". This strain was picked up and revitalized by Diggers
in Australia once T&M dropped it in 1970, bringing the washed out
colours back to life. Stems of bright red, pink, orange, yellow
and white with leaves of dark green. Add them as baby leaves to salad
mixes, or harvest them larger for braising, steaming or stir-fries.
